Local Developer To Build Apartments In Carroll Cut-Rate Furniture Building

May 2014 - West Haven - A local developer approached the owners of Carroll Cut-Rate Furniture to purchase their building. David Beckerman, President of Acorn Group, along with Mark Sklarz & Gary Letendre purchased the Carroll Cut-Rate Furniture building and four other neighboring properties on Orange Street, West Haven for $1.25 million.

The developers filed plans to convert the building to 30 market rate apartments with 7,420 square feet of retail on the first floor. The development is expected to cost $9.5 million, which includes about 60,000 square feet of property. 

They are hoping to create a "college town", attracting UNH graduate students, professors & employees along with people associated with Yale and the Veteran's Medical Center.  There will be 3 one bedroom apartments the rest will be 1,200 square foot, two bedroom units and parking for 100 vehicles.  

Samuel Benjamin opened the Carroll Cut-Rate store in 1926, first as a cosmetic manufacturer. He converted it to a furniture store in 1952. The store will remain open through October with construction beginning shortly after. The famly has not decided whether they will move to another location or close the business.
